The Constitutional Democratic Collection ( Arabic التجمع الدستوري الديمقراطي, DMG at-Taǧammuʿ ad-Dustūrī ad-Dīmuqrāṭī , French Rassemblement constitutionnel démocratique , abbreviation RCD ) was a political party founded in 1920 as a Destur party in Tunisia , which took on its current name on February 27, 1988.

The party leader was former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali . It had an authoritarian appearance and was largely secular . She was a full member of the Socialist International until her expulsion on January 17, 2011 .

History and politics

After several splits, it emerged from two older parties: the Neo Destur Party - founded on March 2, 1934 by Habib Bourguiba - and the Socialist Destur Party , which was given this name in 1964 through merging with the Destur Party founded in 1920 . Under these various names, the party had been in power in the country since independence from the French colonial powers in 1956.

She held 152 of the 189 seats in the Chamber of Deputies from the 2009 general election until January 2011, when Ben Ali was overthrown . 37 seats were reserved for the opposition. The RCD alone provided all members of the second chamber of parliament, the council chamber ( Chambre des conseillers ); this was introduced in 2005.

On February 6, 2011, the Interior Ministry of the Tunisian interim government announced the dissolution of the party. This was finally carried out by court order on March 9th.
