Korean schools in Germany

The Korean schools in Germany are privately organized language schools in which the Korean language is taught and, in some cases, the Korean culture is cultivated.

In the schools, children of the second and third generation are taught by Korean immigrants , by German-Korean parents and by Korean families who are temporarily staying in Germany . Some schools also offer language courses for non-Koreans who want to learn the Korean language for a variety of reasons.

history

Most schools were founded at the time when the Korean miners and nurses who came to Germany as guest workers were granted permanent residence and were concerned that their children, who were already attending German schools, were increasingly losing the Korean language or themselves could not develop in their mother tongue . The schools were mostly founded as registered associations in private initiative and received financial and material support from the South Korean government , which to this day, through the state Overseas Koreans Foundation, takes care of the education of around 7.5 million Koreans abroad and their descendants and the Korean schools supported worldwide financially and with educational material and textbooks.

As of July 2019, there were a total of 28 Korean schools in Germany, 8 of them in North Rhine-Westphalia alone, with most Korean schools in one state. The largest and oldest schools include the Korean School in Hamburg , founded in 1974, and the Korean School in Frankfurt am Main , founded in 1976 . V. , the Korean School Bochum e. V. , the Korean School Dortmund e. V. and the Korean School Berlin e. V.
