Koutiala is a town in Mali in the Sikasso administrative region . Koutiala is a catchment area of around 355,000 people, the city itself had around 141,000 residents in 2009, spread over 18,000 km². The population development continues steadily upwards. The city is 140 km north of the regional capital Sikasso and about 350 km east of the state capital Bamako .

Cotton production

The city is sometimes called “the white gold capital”, with the white gold meaning cotton . Koutiala is the second most industrialized city in Mali, it owns, among others, the Compagnie malienne pour le développement du textile (CMDT) and the Huilerie cotonnière du Malo (HUICOMA) .

Koutiala is in the part of the country where Minyanka is spoken and was founded in the 16th century by members of the Coulibaly family of the Bambara kingdom from Ségou . In 1955 Koutiala received extended rights, comparable to the Central European city rights .

The city is struggling with serious environmental problems because a lake that dries up in the dry season washes pollution from several industrial companies - including three refineries  - into the groundwater , which has now been contaminated accordingly. A change in this ailing situation is not in sight for financial reasons, but also because of a lack of will.

Koutiala is the twin town of Alençon in France .

The administrative unit (cercle) Koutiala comprises 36 municipalities: Diedougou, Diouradougou Kafo, Fagui, Fakolo, Gouadji Kao, Gouadji Soukouna, Kafo Faboli, Kapala, Karagouana Mallé, Koloniké, Konina, Koningué, Konseguela, korouomo, Kouniana, Koutiala 'Pessoba, Miena, N'Golonianasso, N'Goutjina, Nafanga, Nampé, Niantaga, Sincina, Sinkolo, Songo-Doubacoré, Songoua, Sorobasso, Tao, Yognogo, Zamfigué, Zangasso, Zanina, Zebala.
