Krølle-Bølle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Krølle-Bølle ( Krölle-Bölle ; German: Locken-Strolch ) is a fairy tale character in the form of a troll . He is the mascot of the Danish Baltic island of Bornholm . Representations of the figure can be found in many places on the island, Krølle-Bølle items are the most popular souvenirs on Bornholm.

Legend and origin of Krølle-Bølle

According to legend, trolls or underground people (Danish: Underjordiske ) have always been on the island. The approximately 1.30 meter tall creatures with bulbous noses and bushy tails are said to live in the cliffs in underground grottos. The king of the underground is Bobbarækus .

The origins of the underground king go back several hundred years. The sometimes scary stories about him were mainly used to keep the children playing away from dangerous places. The employees of Bornholmske Jernbaner Ludvig Mahler had heard the stories of his mother earlier that they already knew from their parents. When Ludvig Mahler was spending the time with his son Ole in his hut on the edge of Langebjerg in Sandvig in the summer of 1943, one day his son asked him who would live on Langebjerg. Then he told the old stories and invented the figure of Krølle-Bølle . The cheeky little one with a lock of hair and a curly tail - usually depicted with an already smoked herring dangling from a fishing rod - is said to live with father Bobbarækus , mother Bobbasina and sister Krølle-Borra under Langebjerg near the Hammershus castle ruins in the northwest of the island. He is supposed to appear on the stroke of midnight after the third owl call.

Ole was very curious about the little troll and his family, so the father came up with new stories and drew them for his son. The Rønner Verlag Ernst G. Olsen suggested that the Krølle-Bølle drawings, originally intended only for Mahler's son, be published. In 1948 he brought out the book Bobbarækus Filiækus - med Krølle-Bølle roundt på Bornholm . In it, little Krølle-Bølle shows all the sights of Bornholm during an adventurous journey. One of his favorite activities is playing bad pranks. To the angry islanders he calls out: "Bobbarækus Filiækus" (German: I am Bobbarækus' son ). Most of them have so much respect for Krølle-Bølle's father Bobbarækus that they let the rascal go if they mention his name.

Today the ceramic artist Ole Mahler owns the rights to the name Krølle-Bølle and to the drawings by his father Ludvig Mahler. Ole Mahler has been producing ceramic figurines for the Krølle-Bølle family in Hasle and Rønne since 2006 .

Krølle-Bølle ice cream

The islanders named their popular soft ice cream brand after Krølle-Bølle . Until 2007, the Bornholmer dairy cooperative Bornholms Andelsmejeri in Klemensker produced the Krølle-Bølle ice cream, it was marketed by the Nestlé group. In 2007 Ole Mahler signed a contract with the Norwegian Diplom-Is . However, no agreement could be reached on the production location, so the ice cream has not been made on Bornholm since 2008. Ice cream production was relocated to Vebbestrup Flødeis in Hobro on Jutland .

The Funen-based company Butler's Choice , which acquired the rights in 2013, searched unsuccessfully for a Bornholm producer for three years. Since the summer of 2017, Krølle-Bølle-Eis has been produced as fair trade certified organic ice cream in portion cups by a small Danish family business.
