Kreuzberg (Bonn)

The Kreuzberg is a 158 meter high landscape elevation in the city of Bonn . Its north and west sides are forested. It is located in the districts of Poppelsdorf in the north, Ippendorf in the south, endsich in the west and Lengsdorf in the southwest. On the summit is the Kreuzbergkirche , which was built in 1627 by order of Archbishop and Elector Ferdinand of Cologne and can be visited daily. The towers of the church are visible from large parts of Bonn and the foothills .

The Kreuzberg got its name from a pilgrimage site where the holy cross was demonstrably venerated as early as the 15th century. In 1971 the name of the mountain was used to found the Rotary Club Bonn-Kreuzberg .

Surroundings

At the Kreuzberg, the low mountain range, more precisely the Kottenforstterrasse , which is naturally still part of the Lower Middle Rhine area - geologically, however, the Eifel - merges into the Cologne Bay . Therefore, the Kreuzberg offers a wide overview of the city center, which is around 100 meters lower, and the northern part of Bonn. A few meters north of the church there is a vantage point from which you can see Cologne , about 25 kilometers away, on most days of the year . The Cologne Cathedral and the Colonius telecommunications tower can then be seen with the naked eye. At night, the sea of lights from the refinery works near Wesseling on the horizon, as well as the conspicuously illuminated Hermann-Wandersleb-Ring in Bonn-Endenich, stand out. A hiking trail runs around the area of the Kreuzbergkirche and has connecting paths to all neighboring districts. The Poppelsdorf cemetery is located on the northern slope of the Kreuzberg, in the immediate vicinity of the church . On this there are some old and ornate graves as well as graves of famous people.
