War memorial

The war memorial on the market square of the town of Merkendorf in the Franconian Lake District ( Middle Franconia ) commemorates the fallen soldiers of the First and Second World Wars from the town of Merkendorf.

It stands on the western side of the Merkendorf market square and was built in 1921 by the Merkendorf sculptor Wilhelm Riedel to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the First World War, based on plans by the Ansbach architect Philipp. Before the memorial was erected, there was a pump well on the town square.

The war memorial consists of a stone pillar with the names of the fallen soldiers of the First World War carved into it and a figure on horseback.

In 1952, the names of the fallen Merkendorf soldiers in World War II were engraved by master stonemason Friedrich Ramspeck on two limestone blocks with bowls attached in front of the stone pillar.

In the course of planning the redesign of the market square, plans were published in 2006 to relocate the war memorial from the old town to the Friedenseiche from 1873 in the suburbs . According to Mayor Hans Popp, a memorial grove is to be built there. Because of the resistance, the Merkendorf soldiers' comradeship in particular should bring a final decision to a referendum. Since the redesign of the market square was postponed until 2015 due to other construction work, the referendum will be a long time coming.
