history
The area belonged to the kingdom of Ovimbundu King Viyé, who gave the province of Bié its name. In the 18th century, the Portuguese colonial power penetrated this far, in the course of their phased expansion into the interior of their colony Angola. In 1768 two Portuguese expeditionary troops met on the outskirts of Embala .
The place previously called Embala Belmonte was later named Silva Porto , after the Portuguese traveler António Francisco da Silva Porto (1817–1890) who died here in 1890 . The Benguela Railway reached the area in the early 20th century . Silva Porto was elevated to a city ( Cidade ) in 1925 . In the following decades the city continued to grow. In the years after 1935 a large number of buildings were built, including the town hall and the branch of the central bank of the colony (Banco de Angola), the forerunner of today's Angolan National Bank .
After Angola's independence from Portugal in 1975, the place was renamed Kuito. The Angolan civil war that broke out at the same time raged particularly hard here. Kuito was the scene of heavy fighting between the UNITA rebels and government troops several times from 1993–94 and 1998–99 . The city, which had more than 100,000 inhabitants before the civil war, was largely destroyed.
After the end of the civil war in 2002, reconstruction began, which has led to constant improvements in the infrastructure, especially since 2007.
administration
Kuito is the capital of the province of Bié and also the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ). The district has 176,296 inhabitants (2008) on an area of 4814 km².

Culture
The Angolan record pressing plant Fadiang ( Fábrica de discos de Angola ) had existed in the place since the late 1960s . The company also ran the Discoteca do Bié record store and record wholesaler in its building . After independence from 1975 to 1990, the building functioned as a printing house. Since then, it has housed the library of the provincial government, which has also hosted and promoted various cultural initiatives here for several years.
Sports
The sports club Sporting do Bié was founded in 1915 as a subsidiary of the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon . His first soccer team played four isolated seasons in the top professional league Girabola , only to compete in the second division, the Gira Angola , since 2005 . The club's own Estádio dos Eucalíptos holds 16,000 spectators. Other sports include basketball, handball and roller hockey, which are hosted in the club's sports complex on Avenida Sagrada Esperança . The association has also set up its head office there.
The city of Kuito also maintains the Estádio Municipal do Kuito with 9,000 seats.
