The Stadtbad on Friedrich-Engels-Allee was one of the last bathing establishments and was operated in this form for almost a hundred years. The swimming pool with a size of 10.5 × 25 meters offered a swimmer and a non-swimmer area. The monument property was checked in 1997.

Use as a communal bathing establishment

From 1890 only a "bathtub" was operated here, the city of Barmen later bought the property with the building and opened the bathing establishment in April 1902. At that time, the following was advertised:

Shower baths and an 'electrical lighting system', with a 'sweat bath device' and a 'massage and kneading room'! "

Another attraction at the time was a nudist sun area on the roof of the building, which was protected from prying eyes by a cane fence. The pool was heavily frequented by swimming clubs, including the Barmen Swimmer Association and the Workers' Swimmer Association . This was banned by the National Socialists in 1933.

During the air raid on Barmen during the Second World War on the night of May 29th to 30th, 1943, the bath was severely damaged and the entrance area was completely destroyed. After the war, the swimming pool was closed until 1946, when an emergency roof made it possible again. It was rebuilt in different ways and was able to reopen in March 1955 with a renovated facade and vestibule as well as a repaired tub and shower system.

After the war, medical baths and a sauna were offered in addition to the actual bath. The baths were closed in the 1980s due to a lack of demand. On June 1, 1998, medicinal baths and massages were discontinued. In 2004, 93,201 total visits from an estimated 2500 people were counted in the entire spa. With an approximate grant of 479,000 euros in 2003, the decision was made to close the pool.

Successor use

When cracks were found in the pool in June 2005, but the repair was too expensive for the city of Wuppertal, the closure of the pool was finally decided ahead of time in October 2005. In June 2007 it became known that the city had sold the building to an entrepreneur from Essen (Kellermann & Partner). The specialist company for commercial kitchen technology had relocated its headquarters from Essen to Wuppertal. According to press reports, the purchase price was 70,000 euros, but the Essen residents would have to invest considerable financial resources in renovation and renovation. Among other things, the facade on Friedrich-Engels-Allee was refreshed in red.

Kellermann & Partner stopped using the building in mid-2013. Further use was limited to a few offices and an apartment. In June 2014, the real estate agent presented his new usage concept to the press. This concept provides for two of the four parts of the building to be laid down in order to have more than the eight parking spaces in front of the building. The realtor expects this to improve the marketing of the property.
