Kurt Heller (born August 16, 1939 in Vienna ; † April 1, 2020 ) was an Austrian lawyer and constitutional judge . Heller was a member of the Austrian Constitutional Court from 1979 to 2009 .

Career

Kurt Heller was born in Vienna in 1939 as the son of the later SPÖ City Councilor Kurt Heller . He graduated from the Law studies at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna and was there in 1961 for doctor of law doctorate . In 1962 he completed his studies in court , and in 1963 Heller became a trainee lawyer . In 1968 Kurt Heller finally passed the bar exam and subsequently became a criminal defense attorney and independent lawyer.

He later founded the law firm Heller, Löber, Bahn und Partner in Vienna together with colleagues , before it merged with a German and English law firm in 2002 to form the law firm Freshfields, Bruckhaus, Deringer , in which Heller was also a partner. From 1984 to 2004 he was also a member of the executive committee of the Vienna International Court of Arbitration. From 2001 he was therefore also an honorary professor at the University of Linz with the license to teach comparative public law and international arbitration.

On February 23, 1979, Kurt Heller was proposed by the Federal Council to succeed Wilhelm Rosenzweig as a member of the Constitutional Court. He was a member of the Supreme Court for more than thirty years and during that time from 2003 to 2009 was also one of the Court's permanent consultants. On December 31, 2009, Kurt Heller resigned from the Constitutional Court upon reaching the constitutional age limit.

In terms of culture, Kurt Heller was particularly committed to the preservation of Venice . He was the founder of the Austrian committee “Venice Lives”, which set itself the goal of “creating, promoting and deepening cultural relationships between Austrian citizens and Austrian institutions with the city of Venice, its inhabitants and its institutions, in particular providing support for preservation and restoration of Venice's Art Treasures ”.
