Kwale is a small town in Kenya and the capital of the county of the same name . It is located about 30 km southwest of Mombasa . The place has 4200 inhabitants (as of 1999).

At Kwale there was also a prehistoric settlement that flourished around the year 250. The place was first excavated in the mid-1960s. It is the eponymous site for the so-called Kwale Ware and a related cultural group that was found at various sites on the east coast of Africa . It is the earliest Iron Age culture in this area.
