The Kwansei Gakuin University ( Japanese 関 西 学院 大学 , Kansei gakuin daigaku , short: Kangaku ( 関 学 ) or KG ) is a private Christian university in Japan . The main campus is in Uegahara-Ichibanchō, Nishinomiya in Hyōgo Prefecture . Their motto is: "Mastery for Service".

The name Kwansei is actually pronounced Kansei because it follows a transcription from the archaic Japanese Hiragana spelling (く ゎ ん せ い) for Kansei ; Kansei is an alternative reading of the Kanjis " 関 西 " (usually pronounced Kansai , "the region that is west (西, sai) of Hakone's border station (関 所)").

history

The Kwansei-Gakuin (German "Academy of West Japan", English West Japan College ) was founded in 1889 by Walter Russel Lambuth, a missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South . The school was in the village of Harada (today: Nada-ku , Kobe , 34 ° 42 ′ 34.2 ″  N , 135 ° 12 ′ 50.4 ″  E ) and had the theological department and the middle school courses.

In 1912 the school developed into a technical college for the humanities and trade and moved to today's Nishinomiya Uegahara campus in 1929. In 1932 she gained university status and was renamed Kwansei Gakuin University. At first it only had faculties of the humanities and social sciences; In 1952 she founded the Faculty of Theology and then in 1961 the Faculty of Natural Sciences (today: Faculty of Natural and Engineering Sciences).

In April 2009, the Seiwa University ( 聖 和 大学 , Seiwa daigaku ), a Christian educational university in Nishinomiya, was merged to form the Kwansei Gakuin University.
