history

The planning for the construction of the barracks for the National People's Army began in 1965 under the name "Object 65". From 1968 the construction of the barracks began, which was completed in 1972 with ammunition storage and firing range. Subsequently, in 1972, the 16th motorized rifle regiment of the 11th motorized rifle division moved from the Schumann barracks in Leipzig to the new barracks in Bad Frankenhausen. In the following years the area was expanded with a technical area, repair halls and further accommodation buildings, so that in 1975 the reconnaissance battalion 11 from Halle / Saale , location Leninallee and the battalion chemical defense were relocated to Bad Frankenhausen. In 1976 the barracks were given the name "Robert-Uhrig-Kaserne", named after a member of the Communist Party of Germany , Robert Uhrig . On October 3, 1990, the barracks and all the troops stationed there were placed under the command of the Bundeswehr. In 1991 the NVA troops were disbanded and immediately afterwards the armored infantry battalion 381, the armored battalion 383 and the repair battalion 131 of the Bundeswehr were set up. In addition, the barracks were modernized and rebuilt from 1991, so that parts of the accommodation reached the standard barracks 2000 in 1993 . On July 7, 1994 the barracks were renamed "Kyffhäuser barracks". In 1999 a Bundeswehr service center was attached.
