Kyle Michael Shanahan (born December 14, 1979 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American football coach who is currently the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). His father Mike Shanahan was also a coach in the NFL.

Early years

Kyle Shanahan was born in Minneapolis , Minnesota because his father was a coach at the University of Minnesota . He attended high schools in Saratoga , California and Greenwood Village . He then attended the University of Texas at Austin , where he played as a wide receiver for their college football team. Here he met quarterback Chris Simms , with whom he developed an intimate friendship.

Coaching career

Shanahan began his coaching career in 2003 at the University of California, Los Angeles as a Graduate Assistant . A year later he signed a contract in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as offensive quality control coordinator . He stayed here for two years before the Houston Texans hired him as a wide receiver coach under Head Coach Gary Kubiak . A year later he was appointed quarterback coach with the Texans. Another year later he was promoted to Offensive Coordinator. He took over the position of his father, who was head coach of Texas A&M University . After a total of four years with the Texans, he ended up with the Washington Redskins . Here he worked for four years as an offensive coordinator. For the 2014 season , the Cleveland Browns hired him as offensive coordinator. After disputes over quarterback Johnny Manziel with senior management, he left the Browns and joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2015 . In his second year with the Falcons he reached the Super Bowl LI after one season with eleven wins and only five defeats , which was only lost in overtime with 34:28 against the New England Patriots . Shanahan scored the most points on his offense that year in the NFL and was named Assistant Coach of the Year .

As head coach

One day after the Super Bowl defeat, the San Francisco 49ers signed him as head coach. On November 12, 2017, he won his first NFL game against the New York Giants as head coach (31:21). In the 2019 season he moved into Super Bowl LIV with the 49ers with wins against the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers . However, this was lost with 31:20 against the Kansas City Chiefs .
