Léonard Mulamba (* 1928 in Luluabourg ; † August 12, 1986 ) was Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1965 to 1966 .

Political career

In 1964 Mulamba was the commander of the Stanleyville Garrison . In Bukavu he was involved in the fighting against rebel groups. He has been described by observers as one of the few competent officers in the Congolese army.

On November 28, 1965, a few days after the coup by Joseph-Désiré Mobutu against the previous President Joseph Kasavubu , Colonel (later General) Mulamba formed the first government of the Mobutu era. The interior minister of his government was Étienne Tshisekedi , who later became prime minister himself. After Mulamba was released on October 26, 1966, Mobutu took over the post of head of government himself. Mulamba received the post of ambassador to India (1967–1969); he later represented his country in Japan (1969–1976), South Korea (1971–1976) and Brazil (1976–1979). A prime minister was not reappointed until July 1977, when the state was already called Zaire .
