Lê Khả Phiêu (born December 27, 1931 in Gemeindeông Khê municipality, Đông Sơn district, Thanh Hóa province ; † August 7, 2020 in Hanoi ) was General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam from 1997 to 2001 .

Life

Lê Khả Phiêu came from Thanh Hóa . His main time in civil service was as a political officer in the People's Army . At the top of this career he served as Chief of the Political Administration of the Armed Forces. He was admitted to the Central Committee in 1991 and to the party's Politburo in 1994 . Under the protection of Lê Đức Anh , he became general secretary of the party in 1997. In 1999 Lê Khả Phiêu, as Secretary General, signed a border agreement with the People's Republic of China . In 2001 he was recalled by the party's central committee and replaced by the reform-oriented Nông Đức Mạnh .
