history

Church of Löhningen

Löhningen is the settlement first mentioned of all the canton's villages, which already appears in the document from the year 779 about the donation of a Gebalinda de Loninga to the St. Gallen monastery . In 1112, the family of those von Löhningen was mentioned in documents, as landlords who lived in the city of Schaffhausen from 1100 to 1400. Furthermore, in the old writings 1112 and 1131 a Bernhart von Löhningen and in the oldest description of the property in 1150, a Miss Berthe von Löhningen are mentioned. The von Löhningen family reappeared in connection with the land grants to the Spital zum Heiligen Geist Schaffhausen , which became the largest landowner in the village alongside the women's monastery and various nobles. The hospital also received the patronage right of the churches with the corresponding obligations but also the right to tithing . The name Zehntenkeller, an extension of the Spitaltrotte, which was given to the Löhningen winegrowing cooperative by the municipality for use as a wine tavern in 1997, is still reminiscent of this tax levy for the farmers. The close relationship with the church persisted until 1881.

On the occasion of the Reformation , ownership of the monastery passed to the city of Schaffhausen, which from 1529 also had jurisdiction over Löhningen and Guntmadingen. The farmers worked the land on a feudal basis . The first Löhning family names appear in the files in the 15th century. 1439 a miller as feudal bearer of the Paradies monastery, 1466 a Wälti Walter, 1489 Hans Walter as Vogt on the Meierhof. To this day, the Müller, Walter and Spörndli families mainly represent the old citizens of Löhningen.

From 1493 Löhningen appeared as a community for internal affairs. The oldest community constitution goes back to the year 1654: "Order and statute of the shepherds, foremen, messmer and night watchmen of an honorable community of Löhnungen". The change from subordinate to municipality president took place during the French Revolution in 1798. In 1803 he became a collegial authority for the municipal court and from 1831 a municipal council.

coat of arms

Blazon

Divided by red with a green, three-leaf clover and by black with two green diagonal bars.

In the 16th century there are different representations for the coat of arms of the municipality. One time this is the figure of St. Peter with a key, another time a black eagle. In 1606 there is a disk on which a white ploughshare is depicted on a blue background. On the first preserved seal of the community from 1815 is the ploughshare pointing downwards. When the coat of arms was cleaned up in 1949, in order to avoid confusion with other communities that had the same symbol, it was proposed to combine the coat of arms of the Paradies monastery and the Schaffhausen stand colors.

population

The structural change in Löhningen has clearly and sustainably established itself. The former farming village has transformed into a residential community with healthy businesses. Only half a dozen full-time farms have survived in agriculture . The other farms farm their land without livestock as a sideline.

The proximity to the city, the good quality of living, the good traffic connections and the moderate tax rate compared to the cantons have allowed the village to grow strongly. Today the community has 1136 people, 90 of them foreigners. The community was largely spared from the great waves of emigration at the turn of the century before last. The number of inhabitants only decreased from 845 to 672 between 1850 and 1910, and then remained more or less constant until 1980 with 771 residents. The urban exodus has had an impact since around 1990 and the new single-family house quarters caused the population to increase by fifty percent. In the same period of time, tax revenues tripled to a good 2.5 million SFr today, despite the very low tax rate.

The community always maintained good relations with the neighboring community of Beringen . Löhningen and Guntmadingen have always shared the village church on the southern edge of the village. From the sixth grade onwards, the young people from Löhningen attend the school in Beringen. In 2002 the fire brigades of the three communities were merged to form the Klettgau military service association on the initiative of Löhningen. The village can fall back on a good modern infrastructure, a stationery, a grocery store, a bank branch and many other small and medium-sized companies are available in the immediate vicinity. A large part of the population is involved in one of the many sporting or cultural associations (VBG Klettgau), which in turn facilitates the integration of newcomers.

Evangelical Reformed parish

The Evangelical Reformed parish of Löhningen- Guntmadingen belongs to the Evangelical Reformed church of the canton of Schaffhausen , it includes the community of Löhningen and the district of Guntmadingen of the municipality of Beringen . This regulation was retained after the merger of the political municipality of Guntmadingen with the municipality of Beringen.

Despite major changes (especially in the community of Löhningen), the number of members has remained more or less constant in recent years, at a little over 900. A good 760 of them live in Löhningen and just under 140 in Guntmadingen.

The church and rectory are in Löhningen. The pastor is currently working one afternoon a week in the former school building in Guntmadingen to give Guntmadingen people easier access.
