Geography and traffic

Lückendorf is the only German place on the south side of the Zittau Mountains. It extends at an altitude of 398 to 515  m above sea level. NN . Characteristic for Lückendorf is the immediate neighborhood with the second highest mountain in the Zittau Mountains , the Hochwald .

Lückendorf can be reached from Oybin via the Kammloch pass and from Zittau via Eichgraben, formerly the B 96 , in each case via the state road 133.

In Niederdorf, Gabler Strasse leads past the church and the “Alte Schmiede” inn in the Niederauwasser valley to the neighboring Czech town of Petrovice (Petersdorf, municipality of Jablonné v Podještědí ). The Lückendorf – Petrovice border crossing is approved for cars up to 3.5 tons and for buses.

history

A stone hatchet from between 1700 and 1500 BC. BC is the oldest evidence of human activity on today's territory of Lückendorf, but due to the circumstances of the find it may not have come here until the Middle Ages. The sign of the oldest settlement is a late Slavic vessel remnant from the 11th / 12th. Century. Lückendorf as a settlement emerged around 1300 below the Lückendorfer Pass , which is the most favorable point when crossing the Zittau mountain ridge. The Gabler Street is an ancient trade route that an important link between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean and Zittau and German fork ( Jablonné v Podještědí ) in Bohemia showed.

Lückendorf is mentioned for the first time in 1391. In 1691 the evangelical village church was built in Niederdorf, which is known for its lush peasant baroque .

In 1859 the construction of the railway line to Reichenberg brought significant changes. The pass road has lost immense importance. The place was becoming increasingly depopulated. The population fell from 571 to 380 between 1834 and 1910.

In 1893 teachers from Dresden discovered the place and rented empty houses. More and more summer visitors came to the place, which was known for its good air. In 1897 the Zittau master builder Fritsche built the first spa house. A sanatorium (Herzsanatorium Balster ), boarding houses and private vacation rooms followed . In 1925 the place was connected to Zittau by a bus line. In 1930 almost every second house had holiday rooms to rent.

After the Second World War, a large FDGB holiday home (Kretscham) in Niederdorf and one in Oberdorf (FDGB holiday home "Karl Lukas") brought thousands of holidaymakers to Lückendorf every year. The latter is now Lückendorf's largest hotel, Hochwaldblick . The Kretscham and the Kurhaus are empty. In 1971 Lückendorf became a state-approved resort .

Lückendorf's independence ended in 1994 when it was incorporated into Oybin.

Participants in the Lückendorfer hill climb

Since 2000, the Lückendorf hill climb has taken place again in August . It leads over a distance of four kilometers between Zittau-Eichgraben and Oybin-Lückendorf, which overcomes 209 meters of altitude. The race was held for the first time in 1923. At that time (e.g. 1932) drivers like the “mountain king” Hans Stuck , Tom Bullus , the Dresden Hans Lewy (team colleague of Paul Pietsch ) or the “unlucky man” Manfred von Brauchitsch were at the start. Except for a break between 1970 and 2000, it takes place every summer.

There is a ski lift on the Sommerberg and on the Hochwaldblick . Due to its altitude, Lückendorf is known as a paradise for cross-country skiing. The ski lift on the Sommerberg has not been in operation since 2006 due to a lack of funds.
