Lüthold II von Rötteln (* in the 12th or 13th century; † January 16, 1249 ) was Bishop of Basel from 1238 to 1248 . (As Lord of Rötteln, he was Lüthold I.).

Live and act

Lüthold came from the noble family of the Lords of Rötteln, who lived in the Basel area . His father was Dietrich III. von Rötteln, his brother, Walther von Rötteln , was Bishop of Basel from 1213 to 1215, his uncle, Konrad II of Tegerfelden , from 1209 to 1233 Bishop of Constance . Lüthold is first attested in 1215 as a canon in Constance and participant in the IV Lateran Council . From 1233 he was archdeacon of the Diocese of Constance for the Breisgau, from 1236 also archdeacon for Burgundy. He was elected Bishop of Basel in 1238 and received episcopal ordination in March 1239. Lüthold acquired Arlesheim in 1239 from the Abbess of Odilienberg , and in 1241 Burkhard IV von Hasenburg ceded his property to the Bishop of Basel and took it as a fief. His participation in the Council of Lyon convened by Pope Innocent IV in 1245 led to a conflict with the city of Basel, which was on the side of the Staufer emperor . The citizens of Basel stormed the episcopal Palatinate in 1247 and destroyed it, whereupon Pope Innocent imposed the interdict on the city. On March 11, the Pope appointed Berthold von Pfirt as coadjutor , in June Lüthold resigned. He died a short time later on January 16, 1249 and was buried in Basel Minster in front of the St. Stephen's altar in the apsidiole of the south transept.
