LA style was a two-headed Dutch techno - project , which in 1991 by radio host Wessel van Diepen (pseudonym Maxx Mondino ) and music producer and musician Michiel van der Kuy (pseudonym Denzil Slemming was founded and) produced. The biggest hit was the project called James Brown is Dead .

history

The music project LA Style was founded especially for this music style due to the techno / rave scene, which was becoming more and more popular at the time. For Michiel van der Kuy it was initially just a fun project alongside his regular projects such as Laserdance and Koto , with which he each produced spacesynth music. Both styles of music are completely different, which is what made it all so interesting for van der Kuy. Michiel van der Kuy used the pseudonym Denzil Slemming for LA Style , because his real name didn't sound international enough for him. Although Laserdance was the former main project of Michiel, the first single was James Brown is Dead by LA Style 1991/92 be the world's biggest hit. The single was the first rave song to be placed on the US Billboard Hot 100 . LA Style sold James Brown is Dead millions of copies worldwide, ranked number 1 in several countries and was awarded a gold record in America. The bassline of the song contains sounds from the Koto project . The melody was kept in a tango style in the then modern techno garb. The idea for the title came from van der Kuy, who noted that several music producers used samples of James Brown very often at the time . With the title, Van der Kuy wanted to start a kind of small protest against this sample use in an ironic way.

The second single I'm Raving with guest singer Nicolette from Nigeria only reached the singles charts in the Netherlands . The 1993 released album LA Style - The Album could not record any chart success. Three more singles followed, which also did not make it into the charts. The project was terminated in 1995 due to the lack of success.
