The LR5 is a manned rescue submarine which is used to rescue the crew of a sunken submarine . Until it was replaced by the multinational NSRS in 2009 , it was kept on standby by the Royal Navy (RN) in Scotland. It has been leased from a private provider by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) since 2009 .

use

The Royal Navy kept the LR5 in Renfrew, Scotland in constant readiness to be able to react quickly if necessary. The C-17 of the Royal Air Force (RAF) would have been air-transportable over greater distances . The operational operation of the boat was carried out by James Fisher Defense Ltd (JFD). Since the multinational NSRS has been operational since 2009, the LR5 was sold to the operator JFD. He is now operating the boat on behalf of the RAN on a permanent basis. RAN's own boat, the Remora, sank in 2006 and, despite being repaired, could not meet the requirements.

technology

In a single dive, the LR5 can accommodate up to 16 men from a submarine that is up to 400 m under water in addition to its own crew of 3.

The 9.2 m long and 3 m wide submarine is largely made of steel . However, some parts are also made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic and acrylic .

The drive consists of two electric motors fed by accumulators , which drive two three-winged screws. The batteries are charged for 6–10 hours of use. The maximum speed is 2.5 kn.

The equipment includes several underwater cameras, underwater telephones and a sonar . In addition, various scissors can be carried, which, depending on the model, can cut steel cables up to 89 mm thick.
