La Quotidiana ( [lɐkuə̯tidɪ̯anɐ] ? / I ; Romansch for "the daily"; Latin of quotidianus , <day>) is the only Grison Romanesque daily newspaper . It was founded in 1997 and is published by Somedia (formerly Südostschweiz Medien). The newspaper was created with the help of and together with the news agency Agentura da Novitads Rumantscha . The seat of the newspaper was in the meantime Ilanz , but was relocated to Chur . La Quotidiana is published Monday through Friday. Audio file / audio sample

La Quotidiana is written in the traditional five idioms , which have their own written language, as well as in Rumantsch Grischun ; The idiom Surselvian , in which more than half of the articles are often written , is disproportionately represented , as the Quotidiana has relatively few subscribers in the other Romance-speaking areas of Sutselva , Engadin and Surmeir .

history

The newspaper integrated the regional Romansh newspapers Gasetta Romontscha (Surselvisch), Casa Paterna / La Pùnt (Surselvisch / Sutselvisch ) and Fögl Ladin ( Puter / Vallader ), which appear once or several times a week in the corresponding idiom ; only the Pagina since Surmeir ( Surmeirisch ) remained independent. The Quotidiana therefore introduced a Vousch da Surmeir section .

In the 20 years of its existence, the sold circulation of the Quotidiana has shrunk from a maximum of 7,500 to less than 4,000 copies. The Quotidiana thus never reached the total number of subscriptions to the integrated newspapers and today it is less than half. The total weekly circulation no longer reaches that of the merged newspapers:

Subscriptions 1996 1997 2018
Gasetta Romontscha 5,645
Casa Paterna / La Pùnt 1,600
Fögl Ladin 3'255
Total 10,500
La Quotidiana 7,500 3,686

Casa Paterna / La Pùnt (1 ×) 1,600

La Quotidiana (5 ×) 37,500 18'430

Observers attribute the negative development to the lack of acceptance of Rumantsch Grischun among the roughly 60,000 Romansh speakers. Readers did not appreciate the fact that domestic news was simply translated from German into Rumantsch Grischun and that they should read what they had already learned from German-language newspapers. In the Engadin, the Engadiner Post , which appears three times a week, even started a new Posta Ladina column with the publication of the Quotidiana due to the abandonment of the Fögl Ladin . The concept was therefore changed just one year after the Quotidiana was founded. It became the - with reduced content - cover of the earlier regional papers, whose names are now used in the subtitle. This concept, too, has so far been unsuccessful, as readers are too little interested in news from other areas and idioms.

In 2017 it became known that the Somedia publishing house no longer wanted to cover the newspaper's annual deficit of around CHF 300,000 and would close the newspaper for the end of 2017 if there was no solution. The long-time editor-in-chief, Martin Cabalzar, was therefore resigned as a precaution at the end of 2017. In August 2017, an interim solution for one year was found: the federal government , the canton of Graubünden and the Rhaeto-Romanic umbrella organization “ Lia Rumantscha ” take over half of the deficit for 2018. This extends the time to find a longer-term solution for La Quotidiana , whereby however, it is not clear in what form the Romansh news will be distributed in the future. The Lia Rumantscha's project “Medias rumantschas 2019” was supposed to define this in the course of 2018.

In October 2018, the Lia Rumantscha presented the concept. According to this, a new news agency financed by the federal government and the canton of Graubünden is to ensure the survival of the Romansh media, which is financially under pressure. To this end, a new foundation, “Fundaziun Medias Rumantschas”, is to set up an editorial team of twelve to make its texts primarily available to the Romansh media free of charge. The new news agency is to replace the Agency da Novitads Rumantscha and instead of 1.2 million francs, it will receive 2.15 million francs a year. She could start her work in September 2019 at the earliest.
