La Restinga is the southernmost place in the municipality of El Pinar on the westernmost Canary Island of El Hierro and the southernmost point of Spain .
In 2011 the coastal town had 547 inhabitants. It is located on the southeastern tip of El Hierro, in the middle of an inhospitable lava landscape . The place was only created in the 1960s. On the one hand, fishermen from the Valle Gran Rey on the neighboring island of La Gomera settled here, but Herreños also settled here. Today La Restinga lives from fishing on the one hand and tourism on the other. Since the southern tip of El Hierro is dry and rich in sun, numerous apartments have been built there. However, there are only a few bathing spots, a small black lava beach directly in town and - ten kilometers by road - the lava bays of Cala de Tacorón.
La Restinga is close to a diving area . With the diving photo festival Open fotosub , an underwater photography festival takes place here every spring. To the southwest of the village, up to the Orchilla lighthouse , is the 750 hectare Mar de las Calmas marine reserve .
In October 2011, the place was evacuated as a result of increasing seismic activity . After a minor eruption in the sea 2.5 km from La Restinga, further series of smaller earthquakes followed until June 2012. Many dive sites were subsequently closed, but all could be reopened by 2013.
