Lac Retba , also called Lac Rose , is a salt lake in Senegal . It is 35 km northeast of the capital Dakar and less than a kilometer inland from the Atlantic coast.

Lac Rose got its name because of its unique pink color, which is caused by the halophilic algae of the species Dunaliella salina ( Volvocales ), especially in the dry season (November to June). The algae produce a red pigment ( β-carotene ) that supports the absorption of sunlight in order to generate more of the energy source ATP . According to other sources, the color is caused by unspecified cyanobacteria .

The lake is very salty at 380 g / liter, so that you can swim on the water like in the Dead Sea . Its surface has decreased from 4 km² in 1990 to 3 km² in 2005. It is around 1 km from the sea and separated from it by dunes .

The lake was the final destination of the Dakar Rally , the show stage led from the city along the beach and ended with the podium at the lake. Nearby is the town of Sangalkam .
