from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lachenmeyer GmbH & Co. KG welding works for bells and steel construction is a company in Nördlingen . The company has been repairing all kinds of church bells since 1924 . In 2005 the company was featured in the documentary television series The Last of His Stand? dedicated. It is the only German company that specializes exclusively in welding bells . He no longer has any employees.

Working method

To eliminate a crack, it is first widened. A bell-shaped iron sheet is then attached behind the widened crack to prevent the welding material from running off. Then, depending on its size, the bell is warmed up to working temperature in an oven for several days. Once the working temperature has been reached, the crack is closed by gas fusion welding via a hatch in the furnace. The welding rod must be made of the same alloy as the bell so as not to distort the sound. The screws that hold the sheet iron are removed during welding using an oxygen-rich flame. Finally, the bell has to cool down even more slowly.

history

In 1924 one of the bells in the church in Auhausen jumped . Pastor Tobias Wagner asked 26-year-old Hans Lachenmeyer whether he could weld the bell. Lachenmeyer ran a forge in Nördlingen in the third generation, carried out repair welds on gray cast iron parts and had earned a good reputation there. He was followed by his son of the same name. Today the company is run by the grandson of the company founder, Thomas Lachenmeyer.
