The Lake Trasimeno (ital. Lago Trasimeno , German and Lake Trasimeno ) and is 128 km² one of 54 kilometers, the largest lake of the Apennine Peninsula and the fourth largest in Italy. It is located in the Umbria region west of Perugia, 259 meters above sea level, surrounded by mountains up to 600 meters high and up to 7 meters deep. 18 species of fish live in the lake. In the villages on the east and south banks, fishing is still an important source of income.
The lake gained historical importance through the battle of Lake Trasimeno on June 24, 217 BC. Chr .: Hannibal defeated the opposing Roman army under Gaius Flaminius in the Second Punic War here near Sanguineto .
The lake is only fed by small watercourses that often dry out in summer and has no natural runoff. The relatively sparsely populated bank region has partly reed-up bank landscapes. There have been several attempts in history to regulate the strongly fluctuating water level. Already in antiquity the Romans built an underground drainage channel near San Savino , the cava , the 1421 Braccio Fortebracci , later also the popes had it renewed, but it silted up over the years. There were repeated discussions about draining the lake in order to fight malaria and gain new farmland. Only the drainage channel to the Caina (and thus to the Tiber ) that was built in 1898 protected the lake from flooding. The low water level in connection with over-fertilization leads to strong algae growth, especially in summer.
Lake Trasimeno is a popular holiday area in Umbria. There are numerous bathing establishments around the lake, a wide range of campsites, holiday apartments, leisure and sports facilities of all kinds.
The Isola Maggiore is of Tuoro , Passignano and Castiglione del Lago reached by regularly scheduled ships. The uninhabited Isola Minore may not be entered. The Isola Polvese is by boat from San Feliciano reached out. It is largely a nature reserve.
Above the village of Sant'Arcangelo stands the former Benedictine abbey Badia di Sant'Arcangelo . It was built around the year 1000 as part of a defensive wall on the eastern shore of the lake.
