Lajos Portisch [ ˈlɒjoʃ ˈportiʃ ] (born April 4, 1937 in Zalaegerszeg ) is a Hungarian chess player .

Life

Lajos Portisch learned to play chess at the age of 12 and improved continuously. In 1955 he took part in the youth world championship in Antwerp, where he finished 4th. In 1958 he received the title of International Master .

Between 1958 and 1981 he won the Hungarian championship nine times. He has been a grandmaster since 1961 . Between 1965 and 1989 Portisch qualified seven times for the candidates' tournament and made it to the semi-finals there in 1977 and 1980. He is considered an excellent positional player and also one of the most hard-working grandmasters. According to his own statements, he spent eight hours a day playing chess for many years. Together with Balázs Sárközy he published a book in 1986 with the title 600 Endspiele ISBN 3-87144-810-9 .

In 2002 Portisch was made an honorary member of the world chess federation FIDE . He received the highest sporting award in Hungary in 2004, he became the nation's athlete . In 2016 an asteroid was named after Lajos Portisch: (154493) Portisch .

His younger brother Ferenc (born April 9, 1939) is also a chess player and holds the title of International Master.

Between 1956 and 2000 , Portisch took part in 20 Chess Olympiads for Hungary and set several records: Most of the participations (20; the record has since been exceeded by Eugenio Torre , who played his 21st Chess Olympiad in 2012 and also took part in 2014 and 2016 ), games played (260; this record has since been surpassed by Eugenio Torre, who played 270 games after the 2016 Chess Olympiad) and scored points (176.5). The greatest success with the national team was winning the 1978 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires ahead of the favored Soviet team; he also achieved three second ( 1970 in Siegen , 1972 in Skopje and 1980 in Valletta ) and two thirds (1956 in Moscow and 1966 ) with the team in Havana ) places. In the individual ranking he reached second place on the first board in 1988 and second on the second board in 1994 and third place on the first board in 1964 . In 1988 and 1994 he also achieved the third-best rating of all participants. He also reached second place in the 1985 team world championships and took part in eight European team championships between 1961 and 1992 . He achieved three second (1970, 1977 and 1980) and four third (1961, 1965, 1973 and 1983) places with the team, in the individual ranking he achieved the best individual result on the second board in 1961 and on the first board in 1983, in 1965 and 1977 the second best as well as the third best result on the top board in 1970, 1973 and 1980.

In 1970 Portisch was nominated for the USSR against the rest of the world competition and defeated Viktor Korchnoi on the third board with 2.5: 1.5.

Portisch used to play for MTK Budapest FC , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup four times between 1979 and 1990 , and later until 2006 for Csuti Antal SK Zalaegerszeg , with whom he was Hungarian team champion in 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 and between In 2001 and 2005 he took part in the European Club Cup four times, and from 2009 to 2012 for the Aquaprofit NTSK team , with whom he became champions in 2010 , 2011 and 2012 .
