The Lake Diefenbaker is a reservoir in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan . It is dammed by the Gardiner Dam on the South Saskatchewan River and the Qu'Appelle River Dam on the Qu'Appelle River . The construction of both dams began in 1959 and lasted until 1967. The lake is 225 kilometers long and an average of 6 kilometers wide; it is up to 66 meters deep, while the water level fluctuates by 3 to 9 meters annually. The reservoir is named after John Diefenbaker , the former Prime Minister of Canada.
recreation
Three provincial parks and several regional parks are located on Lake Diefenbaker. These include Danielson Provincial Park , Douglas Provincial Park , Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park, and Palliser Regional Park . Recreational activities include fishing, boating, and camping. The lakefront town of Elbow has a marina . The only remaining ferry is the Riverhurst Ferry, a cable ferry between the villages of Riverhurst and Greenbrier.
ecology
The reservoir provides a habitat for numerous species of fish. These include burbot , glass ey perch , pike , herring vendace , American char , Canadian pikeperch , golden-eyed , perch , Atlantic salmon , rainbow trout , sea sturgeon and sucker carp . The sandy beaches of the lake are populated by the endangered yellow-footed plovers.
