Lambert M. Surhone

Lambert M. Surhone (biographical dates and nationality unknown) is the co-editor of more than 235,000 books on demand , the contents of which have been compiled from Wikipedia articles.

Life

Nothing is known about the life of Surhone. It is therefore speculated that it could be a fictional person or a computer program. During research by the American author Pagan Kennedy , the owner of the VDM Publishing Group , Wolfgang Philipp Müller, informed her by e-mail in 2011 that Surhone was a person and one of about 40 people who were responsible for the compilation of "WikiBooks" for the publisher. be busy. In addition to Surhone, “Miriam T. Timpledon” and “Susan F. Marseken” as well as “Mariam T. Tennoe” and “Susan F. Henssonow” are also listed as co-editors, about which nothing is known either. Journalist Tobias Bolsmann doubted the existence of these people in 2010.

Work and criticism

Because the Books-on-Demand published by Surhone contain Wikipedia content from the past few years in unedited form, it has been criticized that it is a business model with which buyers of these publications are supposed to get the money out of their pockets. By specifying editors, the titles would be disguised as seemingly edited books. On the cover of most of the publications that are published by Surhone, there is a red circle that reads: “High Quality Content by Wikipedia articles!” ( German : “High quality content by Wikipedia articles!”); on the back, above a summary in German, is the English note: “Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online.” (German: “Please note that the content of this book consists mainly of articles taken from Wikipedia or other free sources on the Internet. "). Due to these markings, the publications are not misleading with regard to the content and legal action against such publications is therefore not possible, especially since, in accordance with the licensing of the Wikipedia articles on the last pages of each publication, all editors of all versions of the printed Wikipedia Articles are listed.

Occasionally, librarians do not notice that they are Wikipedia content until they look at a purchased item. The educational historian Alexander-Martin Sardina , on whom there are two publications by Surhone, states in his dissertation presented in 2016 that Surhone's publications are "in no way citable", but the number of these publications in academic libraries will increase because "acquisitions are increasing automated according to bibliographies or without professional review ”.

In 2010 the media scientist Stefan Weber counted 417 titles in German university libraries.
