history

Adam Olearius

Adam Olearius , explorer and famous son of the city of Aschersleben, inspired the landscape architects with his scientific work to match themes of his work with design elements such as plantings according to the signs of the zodiac, curious play sculptures or artistic installations. The figure of Olearius and his legacies will be encountered primarily in the city park.

Industrial wasteland and old city park

The area of the former Bestehorn paper mill and later VEB Optima was a dominant industrial wasteland for many years , which had a negative impact on the impression of travelers passing through. In the course of the International Building Exhibition Urban Redevelopment 2010, the area was converted into a modern education center, the Bestehornpark , and transformed into a green school campus for the 2010 State Garden Show . The city park, on the other hand, was laid out as a cemetery at the beginning of the 19th century and was used as such until 1866. Later it was a green area with a Thälmann memorial built in GDR times. Right next door is a rosarium that was laid out in the 1930s and was revived as part of the LAGA.

Award and competition

In November 2005 the city of Aschersleben applied to host the 3rd garden show in Saxony-Anhalt. In February 2006, the state government awarded the contract to hold the 2010 State Horticultural Show in Saxony-Anhalt, and thus prevailed against the competitor city of Dessau .

The aim of the landscape architecture competition held in November 2006 was to design the inner-city open spaces for the State Garden Show and its subsequent use. A special feature of the competition task was the handling of a comparatively small, structured area, for which there were relatively narrow, monumental and spatial requirements.

In June 2007, the jury made the official announcement of the winner: the Berlin office sinai. The two parks in Herrenbreite and Stadtpark were to be fundamentally upgraded in their role as leisure and recreational areas as well as in their historical and representative significance. It was necessary to develop a use for the state horticultural show for the so-called one-terrace.

Construction work and season ticket sales

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 7, 2008. At the same time, the symbolic handover of the site from the city of Aschersleben to the Landesgartenschau Aschersleben 2010 GmbH took place. On November 3, 2008, the landscaping work began in the Stadtpark / Rosarium and on January 19, 2009, the landscaping work on the historic promenade ring of the city of Aschersleben began.

On April 25th, 2009 the season ticket sales started with a cultural construction site party in the garden of the Bestehornhaus Aschersleben.

The sale of tickets made it necessary to secure the entire park area in Aschersleben. And these barriers remained for the citizens. Parts of the parking areas are no longer accessible to citizens during the day. The concept required enormous open spaces, which in simple everyday use led to a loss of the familiar park atmosphere.

The State Garden Show Aschersleben includes five interconnected adventure areas in the city center on a total area of 15 hectares:

Gentlemen's width - theme "Experience"

The visitors were able to experience play areas, areas of calm, themed gardens and, last but not least, several cultural events on the area of Herrenbreite . With around 7 hectares, it represents the largest inner-city and also historical green area and has retained its grown shape. Original old paths were preserved, as were typical rows of trees and open spaces. Modern new water features, plant fields and art objects harmoniously enriched the perception of the park.

Bestehornpark - subject "learning"

After the garden show, the Adam Olearius School was opened in the Bestehorn Park. It is designed as an alternative overall school in which the green classroom finds its place. Events and LAGA's gastronomy were also concentrated in the Bestehorn Park. During the garden show, the hall shows and exhibitions were held in the school's newly built so-called transom extension. The park also featured the whispering olearia , a chill-out garden and an orangery .

City park - theme "remembering"

In the city park, a former cemetery laid out in 1829, the historical path relationships and the old overgrown rose garden (rosarium) were restored under the theme of “remembering”. The scientific work of Adam Olearius (1599–1671), the city's most famous son, played a major role in this. The focus in this park is on the establishment of a plant library (Phytothek), games and art chambers as well as an artistic reminder of the Gottorf globe.

One-terrace and rosarium - theme "relax"

The newly built one terraces are used for relaxation and walking. An oasis on the course of the river that is accessible from the city park. One with comfortable seating and lounging furniture, open spaces and generous plants invite you to relax. Individually designed play elements complete the facility.

The Olearius circular route begins at the Eine-Terrassen and leads over the Promenadenring (the historic moat and today's circular route around the city wall) into the old town. Here the history of the city is pointed out in a narrative and informative form.

Promenades - theme "hiking"

The Olearius circular route runs along the approximately 2.5 km long historical fortifications of Aschersleben. It can be accessed from several sides of the old town. On this circular route, visitors can hike in the footsteps of the city's history. Twelve narrative stations lead past 15 defensive towers, promenades and historical buildings. Visitors could visit this part of the state horticultural show without a ticket.

The logo of the Landesgartenschau Aschersleben 2010 stylized the floor plan of the oldest city in Saxony-Anhalt as a blossom. The color green highlights the individual exhibition areas. The purple areas stand for the flower color of the marjoram plant , which is mainly grown in the region around Aschersleben.
