Lara Victoria van Ruijven (born December 28, 1992 in Naaldwijk ; † July 10, 2020 in Perpignan ) was a Dutch speed skater ( short track ).

Career

Van Ruijven made his debut in the World Cup in Dresden in February 2011 . There she took 30th place over 1500 m and 27th place over 500 m. At the Junior World Championships 2011 in Courmayeur , she won silver over 500 m. In the 2012/13 season, van Ruijven won her first World Cup victory with the relay over 3000 m in Dresden. At the 2013 European Championships in Malmö and the 2014 European Championships in Dresden, she won the gold medal with the relay over 3000 m. At her first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , van Ruijven achieved 17th place over 500 m. In January 2015 she won silver with the relay over 3000 m at the European Championships in Dordrecht . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season she achieved a podium finish for the first time in a World Cup individual race in Toronto with second place over 500 m. In the further course of the season van Ruijven came in the top ten four times over 500 m, including third place in Dresden and thus achieved fourth place in the World Cup over 500 m. In addition, she was third with the relay in Shanghai . At the European Championships in Sochi in 2016 , van Ruijven won the gold medal with the relay. In addition, she was fourth in the all-around event, taking third place over 3000 m and second place over 500 m. At the 2016 World Championships in Seoul , she finished sixth in the relay. In the 2016/17 season van Ruijven came third in the relay in the World Cup, twice in second place and in Dresden in first place. At the 2017 European Championships in Turin , she won the bronze medal with the relay and took fourth place with the relay at the World Championships in Rotterdam in March 2017 . In November 2017 she won her third World Cup victory with the relay in Seoul. In 2018 van Ruijven won her first Olympic medal . With the Dutch relay she won the bronze medal in Pyeongchang over 3000 m. At the 2018 World Championships in Montreal , she won the silver medal with the relay.

In the 2018/19 season van Ruijven achieved two second places over 500 m and her first individual World Cup victory in Calgary . In addition, she won twice with the relay and took second place twice. She reached third place in the world cup over 500 m. At the 2019 European Championships in Dordrecht , van Ruijven won the bronze medal over 500 m and the gold medal with the relay. In the all-around competition she was seventh there. At the 2019 World Championships in Sofia , van Ruijven won the gold medal over 500 m. In the following season, she won three times with the relay and won second and third place each time. In addition, van Ruijven came third twice over 500 m and first in Dordrecht and thus achieved fifth place in the World Cup. At the 2020 European Championships in Debrecen , she won the silver medal over 1000 m and the gold medal with the relay.

During a training camp in France in June 2020, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease , after which she was admitted to a hospital in Perpignan, France. There she died despite two operations on July 10, 2020 at the age of 27.
