Lawrence George Cohen (born July 15, 1936 in Manhattan , New York City , New York - † March 23, 2019 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American director , producer and screenwriter .

Life

He studied film at the City College of New York , from which he graduated in 1963. Cohen began his film career as a screenwriter for television, where he worked for various television series. He later made some cheap horror films and also started working as a screenwriter for cinema productions. He made his directorial debut in 1972 with Bone . He also wrote the scripts for his own films. In addition, he often produced these himself.

The television series Invasion von der Wega, produced from 1967 to 1968, came from his idea, and he wrote the scripts. His work as an author includes a total of more than 80 film and television productions. He himself staged around 20 productions. In 1988 he received the George Pal Memorial Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films . In 2016, the documentary King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen by Steve Mitchell was made about his cinematic work .

Larry Cohen was married twice and had five children. He died of cancer at his Beverly Hills home in March 2019, aged 82.
