as an assistant coach

Lawrence Alexander "Larry" Izzo (born September 26, 1974 in Fort Belvoir , Virginia ) is an American football coach and former football player . Izzo nominally played the position of linebacker , but played in the special teams primarily as "Gunner". He scored four Super Bowl wins (three as a player, one as a coach) and took part in the Pro Bowl three times .

After a nondescript career in college football at Rice University , Izzo was not selected by any team in the 1994 NFL Draft . Izzo, who is small for a regular linebacker (1.78 meters), was so noticeable in the Special Teams with his tough tackles that the Miami Dolphins accepted him as a free agent in their 53-man squad. With the Dolphins, Izzo established himself as one of the best gunner in the NFL and was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2000. In 2001, Izzo was signed by the New England Patriots , where he experienced the climax of his career: within four years he won three Super Bowls ( Super Bowl XXXVI , Super Bowl XXXVIII , Super Bowl XXXIX ) and took part in two more Pro Bowl Play part. In 2007 he was part of the Patriots team, which won 18 games in a row, but lost the Super Bowl XLII to the New York Giants . In 2009, 35-year-old Izzo moved to the New York Jets and then retired from his career. Since then he has been a special teams coach with the New York Giants and won the Super Bowl XLVI as an assistant coach .

Izzo, who is considered a joker, caused a sensation during a Patriots preparation game when, as a test of courage, he did his big business unnoticed on the sidelines . Coach Bill Belichick gave him the game football as a reward.

Izzo has been married to his wife Mara since 2004.
