Larry Snyder (athletics coach)

Lawrence "Larry" Snyder (born August 9, 1896 in Canton (Ohio) , † September 25, 1982 ) was an American hurdler , trainer and officer in the US Air Force . He was best known for coaching Jesse Owens .

Larry Snyder is portrayed by Jason Sudeikis in the film Time for Legends About Jesse Owens .

Military career

Snyder was an aerobatic pilot after high school . He volunteered in 1916 as a flight instructor in the US Army for the First World War . During World War II he was an instructor in the US Navy .

Career in sport

After World War I, Snyder enrolled at Ohio State University , where he was one of the best American 110-meter hurdlers from 1920 to 1924. Because he was injured in a plane crash, he was unable to take part in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris . He ended his own career and started working as a coach. From 1932 to 1942 and from 1946 to 1965 he was the head coach of Ohio State University. Its athletes have won 8 Olympic gold medals, set 14 world records and been named All American 52 times . His athletes included u. a. Jesse Owens , Dave Albritton , Mal Whitfield and Glenn Davis . Snyder was assistant coach for the American Olympic team at the 1952 Summer Olympics and head coach for the athletes at the 1960 Summer Olympics . He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame .
