Maria Laura Gemelli Marciano

Maria Laura Gemelli Marciano (born September 10, 1952 ) is an Italian-Swiss classical philologist .

Life

After graduating from the Liceo Classico C. Colombo in Genoa in 1971, she studied classical philology, Indo-European studies , ancient philosophy and Italian literature at the University of Genoa from 1971 to 1975 . From 1980 to 1987 she taught Latin and Italian as a high school teacher in Ticino . She received her doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1988 . From 1990 to 1991 she was an assistant at the Classical Philological Seminar at the University of Zurich. She was Walter Burkert's research assistant from 1993 to 1996. Since her habilitation in 1996 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich in the field of Classical Philology, she has been a private lecturer there . In the winter semester 1999/2000 and summer semester 2001 she represented the Chair of Greek Studies at the University of Bern . Since 2006 she has been adjunct professor for classical philology at the University of Zurich. In 2011, she gave guest lectures on ancient religious studies at the University of Basel .

Her work and research focus are early Greek philosophy ( pre-Socratics ), doxography , ancient medicine and ancient mysticism.
