Laura J. Mixon

Laura J. Mixon (* 8. December 1957 in Roswell , New Mexico ) is an American science fiction - writer and chemical and environmental engineer . She has been writing under the pseudonym Morgan J. Locke since 2011 . She also writes under this name in the group blog Eat Our Brains .

Mixon writes about the impact of changes in technology and the environment on identity and social structure . Her work has been the subject of academic studies on technology, feminism and gender . Together with game developer Chris Crawford , she also experimented with hypertext fiction . In 2015, she received the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer for her report on the online activities of her fellow writer Benjanun Sriduangkaew .

biography

Mixon was born in December 1957. She studied chemical and environmental engineering. In the 1980s she served in the Peace Corps in East Africa for a number of years . Her first book Astropilots was published in 1987 as part of a youth literature series by Scholastic / Omni. Her second novel, Glass Houses , first appeared in several episodes of Analog magazine in 1991 and in book form with Tor Books the following year. Proxies , her next book, is set in the same universe as Glass Houses . The sequel Burning the Ice takes place many years later.

Mixon is married to science fiction writer Steven Gould , with whom she wrote the novel Greenwar . The couple live in Albuquerque , New Mexico and have two daughters.

Mixon received the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer in 2015 for an online contribution that "describes the malicious behavior of a female left-wing Internet troll". George RR Martin praised Mixon's “detailed, eloquent and devastating exposure of the nasty internet troll known as 'Requires Hate' and 'Winterfox'”, describing it as “a great journalistic contribution, an important contribution to the issues of growing concern to them Appeals to a fan base in this Internet age. "
