The Burning Neighbor is an American short film comedy by the comedian duo Laurel and Hardy .

Since The Burning Neighbor was the template for the later film The Block Heads , the plot is very close to this. The fact that Stan has held a position for free for 20 years does not appear in this film. He starts with Ollie taking Stan to his home and raving about his wife's juicy steaks. She, in turn, is fed up with cooking for Ollie and his friends all the time, which is why she leaves the apartment angrily. The neighbor, Mrs. Kennedy, happens to join them and wants to help them cook something for themselves. Her dress catches fire and is destroyed. She puts on Mrs. Hardy's clothes and when she comes back she hides in a chest that Stan and Ollie want to secretly "smuggle" out of the apartment. However, Mr. Kennedy, who is a policeman, comes in and tells the boys that he sometimes meets other women behind the back of his wife. Mrs. Kennedy hears this from the chest and when Mr. Kennedy takes the chest into his apartment, he feels his wife's anger. As revenge for this, he first gets Ollie from his apartment and hits him on the nose, then wants to do the same to Stan, but is disturbed by Mrs. Kennedy, who attacks her husband violently. Stan leaves the apartment happily whistling, wants to go down the stairs, stumbles and falls down the stairs at length.

- The film was shot in Hal Roach's newly established studio .
- The shooting mostly took place at night, as the shooting of Die kleine Strolche took place in the same studio during the day , but had to end on time at 5 p.m.
- When the film came out, not all cinemas had sound film projectors, which is why some of the sound from records was played. For some other early sound films by Laurel & Hardy Roach had extra silent versions made.
“We had decided we weren't talkies comedians. Of course, we preferred pantonomy as in our silent films. So we said as little as possible - only what was necessary to motivate the things we were doing. When there was any story to be told, we generally had someone else tell it ... over time we got a little more familiar with it and talked more than we originally wanted "
German version
- In 1972 the DEFA Studio for Synchronization in the GDR produced a German dubbed version under the title Fremd wie wir sind . Kurt Kachlicki spoke to Stan and Erhard Köster lent Ollie his voice. Klaus Piontek gave short comments .
- When Beta-Technik was working on the film in 1980 for the ZDF series “Two men thick and stupid”, it was treated like a silent film. Hanns Dieter Hüsch spoke the narrator as well as the other people in the so-called “voice-over” process. So the film was not Germanized lip-synchronic.
