Laurence Maroney (born February 5, 1985 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a retired American football player as running back . He played for the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL).

Life

Maroney went to Normandy High School in Normandy . He played American football and basketball there, and he also took part in some sprint competitions. In basketball he was twice Most Valuable Player of the team, in the national league in the sprint he was third in the 200-meter run. In football, he holds the school's record with 1,902 yards in one season.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota . In 2003 and 2004 he shared his duties as a runner with the later running back of the Dallas Cowboys , Marion Barber III , in 2005 with Gary Russell. Maroney only played 14 of 36 games, yet he won the Golden Gopher and finished third in the history of the Big Ten Conference with over 1,000 yards run each season. In his three-year college years, he ran a total of 3,933 yards.

Maroney was selected as the 21st player in the first round of the NFL Draft , as the second running back of the draft. With the Patriots he played as running back and returner in his first season, together he ran a total of 1,722 yards in his first NFL season.

On September 14, 2010, he (and a sixth-round draft pick 2011) was traded for a fourth-round draft pick 2011 from the Patriots to the Broncos.
