Lauritz Albrecht (also: Laurentz Albrecht , * unknown; † before October 5, 1605 in Lübeck ) was a German bookseller , printer and publisher of the early modern period .

Life

The circumstances of the origin and the early life of Albrecht are not known. There is documentary evidence of his acquisition of Lüb's citizenship in 1579. From about this time on, he ran his bookstore in Lübeck, probably in his own house at Breiten Straße 7 from 1586 . In 1599 another shop was found in Rostock. Geographically, Albrecht was present throughout the Baltic Sea region with publications in Scandinavian languages. In Germany, for example, he has been recorded as a participant in the Frankfurt trade fair.

Since 1585, Lauritz Albrecht also worked as a publisher and, as the market for book printers in Lübeck was now regulated by the approval of only two council printers, he first printed with Asswerus Kröger , who had such a council license in addition to the Johann Balhorns printing company . Outside of Lübeck, Albrecht had Stephan Möllemann printed in Rostock. Albrecht's efforts to get himself into possession of a printing license can be read from Lübeck council files. On the other hand, Asswerus Kröger, a complaint leader, appealed to the council. In 1592 Albrecht tried to found a printing company in nearby Ratzeburg , presumably to save transport costs between Lübeck and the printing shops he frequented in Rostock, Barth and Greifswald. In 1599, Albrecht, presumably in collaboration with the former printer of the Princely Court Printing House founded in 1582, Duke Bogislaws XIII. in Barth Hans Witte , in Lübeck due to a council privilege granted to him, his own printing works.

Shortly before his death, Albrecht tried to take over the university printing works in Rostock in 1603, but this did not succeed. After his death, his heirs continued the business as an undivided community of heirs until 1612. Then his son-in-law, Samuel Jauch , who came from Silesia, took over the business by paying the heirs 1200 Marks in Luebisch.

Lauritz Albrecht is considered to be the founder of the Schmidt-Römhild publishing house in Lübeck, which still exists today (2010) .
