Lawrence Wilkerson (born June 15, 1945 in Gaffney ) is an American military man, retired Colonel in the United States Army and former Chief of Staff to Colin Powell .

history

Born and raised in Gaffney, Wilkerson first studied philosophy and English literature at Bucknell University for three years . He broke off these studies after three years in 1966 to instead volunteer for the Vietnam War . There he was a pilot of the light reconnaissance and attack helicopter Hughes OH-6 with a documented 1100 flight hours in one year. After returning from Vietnam, he completed his civil studies. He then attended the Naval War College at Newport and the Marine Corps War College at Quantico , of which he became deputy director. He then served for several years with the Pacific Command in South Korea, Japan and Hawai, among others, before becoming an assistant to the then Chairman of the General Staff Colin Powell in early 1989 . Wilkerson remained in Powell's service and was also responsible for reviewing the information in the CIA report on chemical weapons which Powell presented to the UN Security Council in February 2003 in the run-up to the Iraq war .

He explained in retrospect that he only had a week to review the report and that he was therefore unable to identify its inaccuracy. Evidence of the existence of chemical weapons in Iraq has never been found. In 2018, Wilkerson presented the Iraq war as an oil and gas war primarily serving commercial interests. However, this was concealed from the American people.

In 1997 he retired. Then he supported Wesley Clark and Anthony Zinni in their campaigns and sympathized with the peace movement .
