Lazar Edeleanu (born September 1, 1861 in Bucharest ; † April 7, 1941 ibid) was a Romanian chemist.

life and work

Edeleanu came from a Jewish family. He received his doctorate from 1883 to 1887 at the University of Berlin under August Wilhelm von Hofmann with a thesis on the first synthesis of amphetamine , which he succeeded on January 18, 1887. Since the psychotropic activity of amphetamine was only discovered in the 1920s , this find was initially not paid much attention.

However, quickly gained importance more discoveries like his sulfur - extraction process , which laid the foundation for the 1910 founded Edeleanu "General Society of Chemical Industry". In 1930 the company was renamed Edeleanu GmbH due to the increasing popularity of the name "Edeleanu". In 1937 the company was bought by Deutsche Erdöl-AG , then changed hands several times and was finally bought out in 2002 by ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH excluding the Leipzig part of the company. Within the company, she now provides the refinery technology division. The core business of desulphurisation and refining has remained up to the present day. The Leipzig part of the company went to the Pörner Group in Vienna as EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft mbH, losing the name Edeleanu.
