Le Coq Sportif is a French sporting goods manufacturer. The company's name is derived from the Gallic rooster , a French national symbol.

history

The company was founded in 1882 by hat maker Émile Camuset. In the 1920s, his son converted the business into a manufacturer of sportswear. As early as the 1930s, the company was equipping the French national football team .

It was not until 1950 that the brand was officially registered. In 1951 the manufacturer became the official supplier of the Tour de France . Le Coq Sportif has been the official supplier to a number of well-known football clubs in Europe since the 1950s, such as B. Everton FC , AS Monaco , Stade Reims , FC Nantes or Ajax Amsterdam . In 1969 they employed 500 people.

Between 1966 and 1973 a close cooperation developed with the adidas company , with Le Coq Sportif contributing its knowledge of the textile industry. In 1974 the company was finally taken over completely by adidas. Adidas, however, continued to use the brand, with Le Coq Sportif supplying the national soccer team of Italy and Argentina, the winners of the FIFA World Cup at the time, in 1982 and 1986. They also worked with numerous tennis professionals, such as Yannick Noah . Since then, however, Le Coq Sportif has clearly lost its importance. In 1995 the company was sold to the American Brown Shoes Company .

In 1998, a group of investors from Alsace , an Alsatian company, bought the brand in order to restore it to its former strength. After this brand relaunch , the company turned to street fashion via the professional sportswear sector .

In 2005, Le Coq Sportif was taken over by the Swiss holding company Airesis . In 2010 a production facility was reopened at the old place where it was founded, Romilly-sur-Seine , so that the company can at least partially advertise with the slogan Made in France .

After 24 years, Le Coq Sportif became the Tour de France jersey supplier again in 2012 . The brand is currently also the supplier of some soccer clubs, especially in Japan and South Korea, where the company is very well known. Here you work with local designers who complement and adapt the global collection for the local market. They also agreed some partnerships to release special models. For example, Le Coq Sportif Korea entered into a partnership with the car manufacturer Peugeot to produce a shoe called “Peugeot 207cc.”.
