Le Devoir is a French-language Canadian daily newspaper with editorial offices in Montreal .

history

The newspaper was founded in 1910 by Henri Bourassa (1868–1952), a significant figure at the time in Canada's political spectrum, which was at a distance from the United Kingdom . Bourassa also took over the editor-in-chief and held it until 1932.

Aimed at an intellectual audience, Le Devoir never became a mass newspaper, but instead became an important medium of the French-Canadian establishment. The close connection with political events was also evident in terms of personnel, for example Claude Ryan, one of the later editors-in-chief, became chairman of the Parti libéral du Québec after his editorial time . On the question of Québec's detachment from Canada, the newspaper leaned on the separatist side.

At times the paper was in considerable financial difficulties, but was finally able to show profits.

Le Devoir today

In 2006 Le Devoir had a print run of 28,351 (weekdays) and 45,974 (Saturdays) checked by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). Bernard Descôteaux has been the editor-in-chief since 1999.
