Le Orme ("The Footprints") is an Italian progressive rock band. Founded in 1966 as a beat band , they turned - after their first psychedelic attempts - to prog rock inspired by Emerson, Lake and Palmer in the 1970s . In addition to Premiata Forneria Marconi and Banco del Mutuo Soccorso , the band is one of the most important representatives of the genre in Italy.
Band history
The band was founded in Marghera in 1966 , consisting of Aldo Tagliapietra, Nino Smeraldi, Claudio Galieti and Marino Rebeschini. First single was Fiori e colori , which was released in 1967. Michi Dei Rossi replaced Rebeschini on drums, Senti l'estate che torna was released in 1968 and - after Tony Pagliuca joined as keyboardist - Milano 1968 and the first album Ad gloriam . In 1969 Galieti left the band and the remaining members recorded the single Irene , then Smeraldi also left the band, which continued to exist as a trio (without a guitarist). With the single Il profumo delle viole , the band began a long-term collaboration with producer Gian Piero Reverberi and in 1971 their first progressive album, Collage, was released.
The successful album followed in 1972 Uomo di pezza , which contained the single Gioco di bimba . In 1973 Felona e Sorona appeared , which was also published in an English language version (with texts by Peter Hammill ) for the international market. The band's first live album was In Concerto in 1974 , followed by the Contrappunti album in the same year . With the guitarist Tolo Marton, Le Orme then recorded the next album Smogmagica in Los Angeles , but Marton was replaced by Germano Serafin immediately afterwards. The single Canzone d'amore was a great chart success in 1976, the next album was Verità nascoste (no longer with Reverberi). After Storia o leggenda the band took a short break.
Again with producer Reverberi, Le Orme recorded the album Florian in 1979 . After Piccola rapsodia dell'ape (1980), the band again remained without a guitarist and took part as a trio with Marinai at the Sanremo Festival in 1982 . The album Venerdì then announced the breakup of the band.
In 1987, however, Le Orme returned to the Sanremo Festival (she presented Dimmi che cos'è there ) and three years later released a new album, Orme , produced by Mario Lavezzi . In 1992 Pagliuca left the band and was replaced by Michele Bon. With the pianist Francesco Sartori the group went on an extensive tour and presented classics of Italian progressive rock. In 1996 the next album, Il fiume , was released, in which Le Orme stylistically went back to the beginnings. In 1997 the compilation Amico di ieri followed and Andrea Bassato took the place of Sartori.
The band continued their activity in the new millennium, with the albums Elementi (2001) and L'infinito (2004). Her tours also took her to America; In 2008 the video and live album Live in Pennsylvania was released . Andrea Bassato left the group and in 2009 there was a break between founder Aldo Tagliapietra and the other two band members. Michi Dei Rossi continued the band under the same name and brought Jimmy Spitaleri on board as the new singer. Fabio Trentini, Federico Gava and William Dotto also joined. With this line-up, the band released the album La via della seta in 2011 . After further line-up changes, the album ClassicOrme was released in 2017 , now with Alessio Trapella as singer and bassist.
