Lea Ackermann SMNDA (born February 2, 1937 in Völklingen , Saar) is a German nun , anti- prostitution and founder of the internationally active aid and lobby organization SOLWODI .

Life

Lea Ackermann was born in Völklingen and grew up in Klarenthal . After an apprenticeship as a bank clerk in Saarbrücken, she joined the Order of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa (“White Sisters”) in 1960 . She studied languages, theology, education and psychology and was in 1977 at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with the work of education in Rwanda in education doctorate . She lives in Hirzenach .

As a teacher in Rwanda and Kenya , she experienced how women in particular - driven into poverty by the destruction of cultural and economic resources - became victims of sex deals, sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Ackermann developed her understanding of mission from her experiences with women affected by sex tourism and forced prostitution . In 1985 she founded the women's project SOLWODI (Solidarity with women in distress) in Mombasa / Kenya . With counseling and educational offers it helps that the injured women come (again) on their own feet. Ackermann later founded SOLGIDI (Solidarity with girls in distress) with Agnes Mailu.

In Germany, too, several SOLWODI contact points are now taking care of foreign women who came to Germany on the promise of work or marriage and were victims of forced prostitution and human trafficking.

On February 29, 2012 Lea Ackermann was awarded the Great Cross of Merit for her work as a women's rights activist . On December 12, 2019, Federal Minister Gerd Müller awarded Sr. Lea Ackermann the "One World Gold Medal" for her life's work.

Co-founder of Solwodi is Fritz Köster SAC , who died in 2014. In July 2020, Ackermann handed over the management of Solwodi to Maria Decker.
