Lee Joseph Fogolin (* 7. February 1955 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a retired American ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 1972 to 1987, among other 1032 games for the Buffalo Sabers and Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League on the Has contested the position of the defender . Fogolin won the Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers in 1984 and 1985 . His father of the same name, Lee Fogolin senior, was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Fogolin was born in Chicago while his father Lee Fogolin senior was active as a hockey player for the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League . However, Fogolin spent his childhood in Thunder Bay in the Canadian province of Ontario . There he gained his first experience in ice hockey with the Thunder Bay Marrs until the beginning of the 1970s , before he moved to the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey Association in the summer of 1972 . The defender spent two seasons in the junior league before he moved to the 1974/75 season in the 1974/75 season as a result of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft , selected in the first round in eleventh overall position by the Buffalo Sabers .
The defender immediately received a regular place in the squad of the Sabers, with whom he reached the final of the Stanley Cup in his rookie season , but was defeated by the Philadelphia Flyers . As a result, Fogolin developed into a solid defensive player who was also able to open the game in his own third, but the team remained largely unsuccessful. After five seasons in the service of the Sabers, the time in Buffalo came to an abrupt end due to the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft when he was selected by the newly admitted Edmonton Oilers .
The Oilers around Wayne Gretzky developed into a serious title contender in the following years. After the team had been defeated in the final series in 1983 , Fogolin won the Stanley Cup in each of the following two seasons. In the course of the 1986/87 season , Edmonton increasingly relied on younger players, making the now 31-year-old dispensable. Fogolin was transferred back to his ex-team in Buffalo in March 1987, together with Mark Napier . In return, the Oilers secured the services of Normand Lacombe and Wayne Van Dorp and both teams exchanged their four-round voting rights in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft . After nine appearances for the Sabers, Fogolin finally ended his active career after the end of the game year in the summer of 1987.
International
Fogolin took the national team of the United States at the 1976 Canada Cup in part and thereby came in two tournament games used. The Americans took fifth place there.
