Teaching load

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In higher education, the teaching load is the teaching or teaching obligation of a university professor or academic employee . It is often measured in hours per week (SWS) and includes the attendance time in the courses without preparatory or follow-up activities.

The legal ordinances provide for a certain flexibility so that the teaching and teaching duties can be brought forward or performed later if the teaching company requires this.

Teaching loads in Germany depending on the employment relationship and the type of university

There are different teaching loads, depending on whether it is, for example, a university or a technical college .

A university professor usually has a teaching load of 8 to 10 SWS , a professor at a university of applied sciences with the exception of Saxony-Anhalt 18 SWS. In Bavaria, the teaching load at universities of applied sciences was 19 SWS from 2004 to 2013. The high teaching load at universities of applied sciences has historical roots. Junior professors at universities usually have 4 SWS teaching hours before the evaluation and 6 SWS after the evaluation. Junior lecturers (office in Baden-Württemberg ) each have twice as much teaching duty. Scientific staff at institutes at universities usually have a full or half-time position where they have to hold two or one course (4 or 2 SWS). Academic employees in third-party funded projects generally have no teaching duties at all. On the other hand, among the academic staff, the teachers for special tasks - sometimes also as unscheduled professors - have to teach 12 to 16 hours per week at universities or usually over 20 hours per week at universities of applied sciences.

Depending on the federal state and in some cases depending on the university, there is the option of stipulating deviations from the standard load upon appointment or in the employment contract. For example, there are reductions for office as president, vice president or dean , which typically amount to 50 to 100 percent of the deputate depending on the office and state. Anyone who takes on a project management role in research clusters of the Excellence Initiative can - depending on the university and federal state - also have their contribution reduced by 50% to 100% upon request. Smaller relief hours ("relief hours"), usually 1 to 3 SWS, are available for other tasks in self-administration .

In some federal states, for example in North Rhine-Westphalia , the deputation can be determined during the appointment negotiations for a professorship. There are now so-called research professorships at universities with a deputate under the standard obligation of 9 SWS as well as teaching professorships with a higher deputate. For this purpose, the office of university lecturer has been introduced in Baden-Württemberg .
