The Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich , Leibniz-LSB @ TUM for short (formerly the German Research Institute for Food Chemistry DFA) is a non-university research institution based in Freising . Her research activities are assigned to application-oriented basic research in the field of natural sciences in the field of food chemistry and food technology. The institute is a legal foundation under civil law and is a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Association (WGL).

history

The institute was founded on April 3, 1918 under the royal Bavarian government as a foundation under public law. Due to the inflation in 1923 , the foundation's assets were lost, and it was affiliated to the "University Laboratory for Applied Chemistry" at the University of Munich . In 1944, the institute's rooms and almost all of the institute's property were destroyed by air raids, and in 1946 research was resumed in makeshift accommodation.

In 1948 the institute was financed by the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture and the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry , and in 1977 the foundation was included in the so-called Blue List . In the same year the institute moved into new rooms in the building of the Faculty of Chemistry in Garching near Munich . In 2010 the facility will be relocated to Freising. In 2017, the research institute is threatened with bankruptcy due to fraud and misappropriation of funds by administrative employees, which can be averted. In the same year a structural and scientific-strategic realignment of the institute takes place. As a result, it is renamed the Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich.
