The Lejeuneaceae are a moss family from the class of Jungermanniopsida and under the leafy liverworts one of the richest. With almost 1300 species, it is mainly found in the tropics and subtropics . There are only seven genera in Europe. Many species grow epiphytically , especially on leaf surfaces of higher plants. Other species grow on rocks or even on the wing covers of beetles.

features

These are relatively small to tiny plants that can hardly be seen with the naked eye. The width is less than 1.5 millimeters. A characteristic feature are the flank leaves, which are split into an upper and a lower lobe. The two lobes are still fused together on one side along their entire length, and the lower lobe is folded over. In this way, a sack-like or pocket-like structure is created. Its exact shape is typical for the individual genera and species. Sub-leaves are usually present. The oil bodies are very small and numerous. The "perianth" is pear-shaped, sometimes has five wing-like folds and forms a short tube at the mouth.

Occurrence

The main distribution area of the family is the tropical lowland rainforests. The Lejeuneaceae represent the majority of the epiphyllic mosses. The few European genera are mainly distributed in the western Mediterranean-Atlantic. They are considered tertiary relics here.

Systematics

The family is systematically very difficult. They are probably the phylogenetically youngest moss group. It consists of 87 genera with around 1280 species.

The following genera and species are native to Germany:
