The Lempira has been the currency of Honduras since April 3, 1926 . It is named after the cacique Lempira der Lenca , who lived from around 1499 to 1537 and fought against the Spanish conquerors. The first Lempira silver coins were minted in 1931, they show Lempira's portrait with a feather headdress on the reverse. They were minted with a weight of 12.5 grams and made of silver with a fineness of 900/1000. Today, coins of 1, 2 (both rare), 5, 10, 20 and 50 centavos, as well as banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Lempiras, are in circulation.
