Lene Cécé

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lene Cécé is a small area on a cliff, protected by an overhang, about 2.5 kilometers from the East Timorese town of Tutuala ( Tutuala administrative office , Lautém municipality ) on the eastern tip of the island of Timor . It is located a few kilometers from the sea, at an altitude of 250  m , about 500 meters northeast of the road from Tutuala to the beach of Valu and is oriented to the southwest, towards the interior.

Rock paintings several thousand years old have been discovered here. The pictures are high on the wall of the overhang, the top one at a height of three meters. The most striking are pictures of small anthropomorphs in frontal and profile positions, boats and radiant circles that can be interpreted as suns or stars. A large boat has a high, drawn-up bow that is lavishly decorated with a "kite". The stern falls off. Human figures stand on deck and inside the boat, which is shown in X-ray style . Some of the figures have elaborate headgear and hold weapons or other objects. Above the boat there is a bird that seems to be connected to one of the human figures by a line or rope. This bird is very similar to a cassowary . A circle of rays above the boat has 12 solid red rays and the center circle is divided into quadrants. The boat has features similar to those found in war canoes, which are in the more detailed, naturalistic form on early bronze drums of the Dong Son culture (around 800 BC to 200 AD) from the area of what is now Vietnam , can be found. Later drums show more stylized images, as do later East Indonesian drums from the 3rd century AD. Such drums were also found in East Timor, among others.

A smaller boat shows clear similarities with a picture in Dudumahan on the Moluccan island of Kei Kecil .
